Question: I had a look at the website but didn't see if there is a cost for registering for the Flyathlon... also, is it possible for flying teams to break up the running & kayak tasks, i.e. 2-3 people fly over as a team, then one of them run, then two of them kayak? I may want to participate with either one or two of my students Answer: The flight portion of the Flyathlon is as a team and the credit for the flight section is given to everyone on the plane and it does not matter whether one is pilot or passenger; i.e. pilot & passengers get the same point score which is added to the individuals run & kayak segment. It is possible to do a short quarter mile run from the airport to the Kayak launch place which one may choose to take. There is a fee which is all inclusive; lunch, kayak rental & gear and Flyathlon promo items of $120 per participant (pilot and/or passenger so for example if there are pilot plus 2 on board they need to pay $360 Here is a link to register & pay or you may mail a check http://flyathlon.com/pages/Register.htm once you submit the registration form you will receive a thank you page proceed to check out portal or you may just send a check to Flyathlon LLC, PO Box 1575, Palo Alto, CA 94302 Question: I'll have a rider in the plane and the Kayak. What's their cost since they wont be renting a kayak? We'll be a 2 person team Answer: Tandem Kayaks are available for participants who want to share the Kayak ride. The intent was for young participants to join an adult and enjoy the youth discount of $20 for the kayak rental. In the event two adults participant would prefer to ride in a Tandem Kayak we will discount one participant at the youth fair . There is also an options for family members who want to join in at the Kayak & lunch event only for a special limited rate Question: I'm very interested in participating but confused as to exactly how each event works. Does your website address this in detail? Do you provide kayaks? Do you provide (or do I not need) a wetsuit? The event is scheduled from 9 am till 5 pm. But a luncheon is also scheduled. Is lunch served mid-race Answer: A detailed Flyathlon (one participant) package will be mailed to you. The first segment is the timely arrival to Half Moon Bay Airport in a preset time window and demonstrating a precision landing (relative to an event threshold mark) All the participants (pilot & passengers) on the same flight will share the fly segment score. After parking & tie-down participants will gather in a staging area and will be given the sign to start the run segment. Since the participant can not arrive all at the same time the run segment will be in groups and will start every half hour. The run is 3 miles. At the end of the run segment the Kayak segment will start. Kayaks and gear are included and will be provided by the organizers (Wet suits are not required at this time of year)9 – 5 is the estimated time the event will take place, beginning with the arrival & landing to the end, including an award ceremony and get-together event. “Late” Buffet lunch (food service) will be offered at that time. Mid race water will be served. Question: How can I practice the Kayak Segment? Answer: Here is a link to a coupon with the HMB Kayak Company. Kayaks are available at reduced rate
